Pixar’s Success With Cars 2
With box office earnings exceeding 200 million dollars worldwide, Cars 2 obviously presents another Disney-Pixar success story. Nonetheless, it is also the latest source of a controversy that is ongoing and will certainly continue to grow in coming years with new animated releases. Some of the more conservative parents and moviegoers who have seen the film seem to think that it’s not suitable for children, on account of violence and a complicated storyline.
But for better or worse, this is the trend that is developing among children’s movies, and no one who has been paying attention to the ramped-up action, heavy thematic content, and emotional complexity of child-oriented movies and television in the 2000s should be surprised to find that Cars 2 has taken this a step further, following upon the tear-inducing poignancy of Toy Story 3 and the shared focus on a very young and a very old protagonist in Up.
